The Royal Raid offers participants the opportunity to discover the spectacular natural landscapes of southern Mauritius.
First held in 2006, the Royal Raid is one of Mauritius’ most iconic trail-running events.
More than a race, it is a journey across the wild and spectacular landscapes of south-west Mauritius. From the open scenery of Yemen to the tropical forest of Black River Gorges, the heights of Plaine Champagne and the sweeping views over Bel Ombre, the Royal Raid offers participants a side of Mauritius that few people ever have the opportunity to experience.
Challenging climbs, technical forest trails, fast-running sections and unforgettable scenery make the Royal Raid a unique sporting adventure, with every course finishing in the welcoming atmosphere of Tamassa.
The different courses are designed to challenge runners while taking them through some of the island’s mostbeautiful natural surroundings.

The Royal Raid 12 km is the perfect introduction to the spirit of the Royal Raid.
Starting and finishing at Tamassa, the course will take participants through the beautiful natural surroundings of Bel Ombre. It offers an accessible but exciting trail-running experience, combining tropical scenery, varied terrain and the unique atmosphere of race day.
Whether taking on a first trail race or aiming for a fast performance, participants will enjoy a memorable sporting experience before crossing the finish line at Tamassa.
The detailed route description, map, elevation profile and GPS link will be provided separately.
Start: Jet Ranch at 07:00
Finish: Tamassa
Minimum age: 18 years
Starting from Jet Ranch, the Royal Raid 35 km may be shorter than the 80 km, but it remains a serious and exciting trail-running challenge.
The opening section allows runners to find their rhythm on the heights of the island before the course begins its descent into the lush, humid forest of the Black River Gorges National Park.
Deep in the heart of the Gorges, the terrain becomes wilder and more technical. Runners must then face the legendary ascent of Parakeet Trail—a sustained climb through tropical forest towards Plaine Champagne, one of the most memorable sections of the Royal Raid.
After reaching the high point of the course, the landscape opens up and reveals beautiful views towards the southern coast.
The course then joins the Bel Ombre Trail, also known as Watook Trail, for an exhilarating descent through changing scenery, from native forest to the open landscapes and sugarcane fields of Bel Ombre.
The finish at Tamassa awaits runners at the end of a demanding but exceptionally rewarding journey.
The Royal Raid 35 km combines everything that makes trail running in Mauritius so special: tropical forest, challenging climbs, technical descents, spectacular views and the satisfaction of reaching the coast after crossing some of the island’s most beautiful natural terrain.
Start: Yemen at 05:00
Finish: Tamassa
Minimum age: 18 years
The Royal Raid 80 km is the ultimate challenge and the flagship race of the event.
The adventure begins before sunrise in the magnificent wilderness of Yemen. As daylight slowly breaks over the west coast, runners will cross rolling and sometimes steep trails through a vast private nature reserve, surrounded by remarkable landscapes and, with a little luck, herds of deer.
After leaving Yemen, the course heads towards the Black River Gorges National Park. The atmosphere changes as runners enter the heart of Mauritius’ tropical forest and begin the long climb towards the island’s central plateau.
The route continues near the Mare Longue reservoir before reaching Jet Ranch, an important milestone in the race. From there, runners return to the forest, descend into the Black River Gorges and prepare for one of the legendary challenges of the Royal Raid: the climb up Parakeet Trail.
This demanding ascent leads towards Plaine Champagne, at approximately 720 metres above sea level and historically the highest point of the course. The reward is an extraordinary feeling of achievement and spectacular views over the south-west of Mauritius.
The final section follows the Bel Ombre Trail, also known as Watook Trail. A long descent with magnificent views over the southern coastline takes runners out of the forest, through the landscapes and sugarcane fields of Bel Ombre, before an unforgettable finish at Tamassa.
The Royal Raid 80 km is a true test of endurance, determination and mental strength—a rare opportunity to cross Mauritius from its wild western landscapes to the southern coast in one extraordinary day.
